Bangton Boys or commonly known as BTS, is a seven member, world famous, Korean pop band hailing from Seoul, South Korea. Formed in 2010 and originally intended by its founding members to be a hip-hop band, their music, over a period of 10 years, has evolved tremendously and diversified to include a wide array of music genres.
Their R&B/EDM tracks have not only cemented their status in Korean pop history but their witty music and thoughtful lyrics which often highlight mental health issues, loss, individualism and the journey to discover the self, has enabled them to cross borders and establish themselves “Force to be Reckoned With”, the world over.
With the Times magazine labeling them as the “Princes of Pop”, here are a few accomplishments of the Korean heartthrobs over a decade,
- Their album, Map of the soul: 7, is ranked as the best selling music album in South Korean music history.As per IFPI’s Global Artist Chart 2018, BTS is ranked number 2 on the best-selling artist list worldwide, and the only non-English speaking boy band to achieve this.
- And have been featured on the Times International magazine cover as “The Next generation Leaders”
- They are the first Asian and non-English speaking band to perform in front of a sold out Wembley Stadium.
- They have been awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the President of South Korea as a result of their efforts to spread South Korean culture all over the world.
- BTS is the first Asian band to top the US Billboard 200, four times, since the Beatles.
With that stated, here are some of the interesting facts regarding the 7 members of the K-pop band BTS,
1- RM – Kim Namjoon
Well known as the “God of Destruction” because as per his fellow band members, he destroys everything he touches e.g. shirts, jeans, sunglasses, even doorknobs. He is the founding member of the band and because he was the first one, he is often referred to as the group’s leader.
He often serves as the band’s translator when they are touring in Europe and the North America, since he is the only one fluent enough in English. The interesting part is, he taught himself English by watching Friends with English subtitles. In addition to that, he is really smart, boasting an IQ of 148, and was ranked amongst the 1% of South Korea’s brightest.
Previously, he was involved in the South Korean underground rap industry, performing under the stage name “Runcha Randa”. He released a few of his tracks related to that time period and has collaborated with Block B’s Zico.

2- Jin – Kim Seok Jin
Also commonly referred to as the “Worldwide Handsome”. The oldest amongst the 7, but by no means the most mature. Like you would expect any Sagittarian, he is eccentric and very funny. When it comes to hitting the high notes, BTS relies on Jin to deliver. Furthermore, he can play the guitar, the piano and the pipe organ and has made a cover of the song “epiphany”.
All of you that have been following BTS from its inception, you would have noticed that Jin’s dancing skills were not very refined. It was not until 2016, that Jin was assigned a central position for the band’s dance acts, and later in the music video of “Wings” Jin thrilled the fans with his mind boggling dance moves.
He also has a cooking blog, and often shares his expertise in different cuisines via the V app. One of the peculiarities that Jin has is he likes strawberries but has a sheer distaste for strawberry flavored food items.
As the oldest member of the band, it also a lingering question whether Jin will join the Korean military? Since every adult, by law, is required to enlist in the South Korean military. During an interview with CBS, he commented, ” As a Korean, it’s natural & someday, duty calls we will be ready to respond & do our best.”

3- Suga – Min Yoongi
Mature, quiet and very thoughtful, there is no wonder why Suga is called grandpa. Amongst the 7, he’s always the one with something enlightening and philosophical to contribute. Just like RM and J-Hope, Suga has carved himself a solo career, with songs focusing on mental health and the plight of the young people in the 21st century.
He has the honor of being the lead rapper for BTS. It is rumored that listening to Stony Skunk’s “Reggae Muffin” sparked his interest in rap music and listening to Epic Highs’s “Fly” convinced him to become a rapper.
Suga has been engaged in composing and writing songs from a tender age of 13, and by the time he hit 17, he already had a part time job at a recording studio. Prior to his career with BTS, Suga performed underground under the stage name “Gloss”. He produced his first song back in 2010 titled “518-062” while being a part of the hip-hop band D-Town.
Due to the fact that Suga has experience in music production, he has helped produce numerous songs for BTS including “Jump”, “Let Me Know” and “Boys with Fun”.

4- J-Hope – Jung Ho-Seok
The loudest of the lot, energetic, scared of roller coasters and incredibly talented. Prior to joining the boy band, J-Hope was part of an underground street dance team by the name of “NEURON”(now you know how he got his moves) and even went on to win a dance battle and perform in numerous festivals.
Highly athletic, he used to be a tennis player in elementary school, and took part in numerous school-level competitions, which earned him a bronze medal.
By a majority of the BTS Army, J-Hope is considered the dance monster amongst the 7, courtesy of his underground dancing days.
WWE wrestler and Hollywood star John Cena is a huge J-Hope fan. On his Instagram he once uploaded a caption-less picture of Hobi, intrigued fans asked Cena whether he was an Army? and after searching about both BTS and the BTS army, Cena complied.

5- Jimin – Park Jimin
A valedictorian prior to his days with BTS, he was one of the highest ranked student in school and was class president for 9 years. Nicknamed Mang-gae rice cake, Jimin was the last member to join the boy-band.
The shortest among the 7, Jimin wants a partner who is at least shorter than him. He quoted his ideal type as someone who is nice, cute, charming and especially shorter than him.
Before his stardom days, he used to dance at an arts high school, and his teachers quickly noticed the hidden talents that Jimin possessed, thus they convinced him to audition to become a K-Pop star.
There is a popular rumor that due to his weight, Jimin considered himself fat, and because of it he went into a depression and started starving himself until Jin caught wind of his activities and convinced him out of it.
A huge animal lover, when asked what would be his ideal super-power, Jimin simply said “i want to talk to dogs and animals”.

6- V – Kim Taehyung
FYI, the phrase ‘I Purple you’ was coined by him. The “V” for Kim’s stage name stands for victory. During an interview he revealed that his stage name was chosen last. The three names suggested were, Six, Lex and V… after a few discussions both the team members and the PD concurred that V suited Kim the best.
Nicknamed Blank Tae or simply Tae Tae, V loves watching cartoons and anime. Often credited by band mates as having a 4D personality who often times engages in self-deprecating behavior just make people laugh and do silly stuff to keep the mood light. As per fellow teammate Suga, he described V as being both a genius and a dork.
His favorite nickname for his mom is eomma and often times you can catch him exclaiming apa! well that is his synonym for hurt. In addition to this, he likes biting his nails when nervous and often times opens his mouth playfully.
In addition to being a singer in BTS, V has also debuted in a television drama series by the name of Hwarang: The Beginning.
Not only is he a talented singer, dancer, and actor he is also fluent in a number of languages and is particularly fluent in Japanese. With his song “Winter Bear” Taehyung showcased his English speaking skills.

7-Jungkook – Jeon Jeongguk
In terms of age Jungkook is the youngest member of BTS. Whilst young he dreamt abou becoming a professional badminton player, however, thanks G-Dragon’s songs he later changed his goal and settled for becoming a K-pop megastar.
His journey with BTS started after he got inspired listening to the Rap Monster’s raps, this eventually led to him signing with Big Hit Entertainment.
He has firmly established himself as the band’s lead vocalist, sub-rapper and its lead dancer. Before settling for Jungkook as his stage name, he considered a number of unique catchy names such as Seagull, Tattoo, and Ean.
Although he can both dance and sing, prior to BTS’s debut Jungkook left South Korea for the US in order to refine his dancing skills. The experience he had in the US convinced him to drop music altogether and to pursue a career in dancing. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of Jimmin, he settled to come back to the team.
Initially he did both vocals and rap, but later on he stuck with providing vocals for the band. Jungkook’s is also called by loved ones as the “Golden Youngest” because his mother dreamt about gold before he was born.
