Although, some might argue that there are certain disadvantages of not wearing a bra, you cannot really ignore the cons of wearing one either.

Wearing garments to support breasts may date back to ancient Greece. However, the first modern brassier, commonly referred to as a bra, was patented in 1899, by a Dresden based German, named Christine Hardt.

Bras, through the ages, have been designed for a variety of reasons, ranging from enhancing a woman’s breast size, to creating a cleavage or for other aesthetic reasons.

But it has been argued by feminists that bras are worn by women because of societal pressure and sometimes, as part of school and workplace dress code requirements. In 1873, the author Elizabeth Stuart Phelps advocated that women burn their corsets.

Societal pressure or not, there are 7 amazing reasons why it is healthy to “unshackle” those breasts,

Following are 7 Risks of wearing a bra :

  • Cancer
  • Back pain
  • Suffocation
  • Fungal Infection
  • Tissue Damage
  • Saggy Breast
  • Hernias

1. Cancer

Medical anthropologist Sydney Singer has claimed that, across the world, breast cancer is a problem only in cultures where women are wearing bras. He believes tight bras cause congestion in the lymph nodes, a vital part of the immune system and the body’s first line of defense against the spread of cancer.

2- Back pain

If the bra is ill fitting, this may result in chronic back pain and a pinched nerve in the neck. Why? Because, contrary to popular belief, it’s not the cups of your bra that do the heavy lifting, instead, it is the straps and the back of your bra that do the hard work.

3- Suffocation

Wearing tight bras also puts stress on your bones and muscles giving rise to breathing problems.

4- Fungal Infection

Bras can also cause lesions and rashes over your skin. However, if ignored over a long period of time, it can result in a fungal infection.

5- Tissue Damage

Because bras are designed to push the breasts towards the rib cage, it can result in internal injury and pain  in the ribs. More specifically, the mammary gland tissues can be damaged due to this.

6- Saggy Breasts

Bras can actually cause your breasts to sag leading to flat or deflated breasts! Why? Because wearing bras weakens the muscle that hold up the breasts. As per the experts, it’s better to not wear bras longer than 12 hours.

7- Hernias

Typically, this occurs from an underwire bra or a pushup bra style, that is a poor fit. Pressure accumulates under the stomach and the tissues get pulled and pushed in all kinds of unnatural ways.
