The shift from performing your job from an office to working from home has been swift, and in no way gradual. Although, working from home has many advantages in terms of the freedom to wear anything, stay close to your loved ones, and to sleep on your bed while on a break, it does present quite a few problems; you are unable to set clear boundaries on what you should and should not do. For instance you might engage in unhealthy eating habits: rushing to the kitchen for a quick snack. Spending your days on the couch without feeling the need to walk around. All of these can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health.

1- Set up a separate work station

If you want to be effective while working from home, you need to clearly define your professional and personal responsibilities. And for that to happen, you need to find yourself a dedicated space, which will be used solely for work. Your bed, couch and rugs should be used only to play video games, watch TV, and to have sex. Remember, performing work related activities on your bed or couch can later hamper your ability to relax, since professional obligations will find a way to occupy your mind.

2- Follow a timetable

By far the best advantage of working from home is the convenience to wake up late, and to work at odd hours. But as tempting as it might sound, you should ditch this idea altogether. Why? Because its unhealthy, and lockdowns/quarantines won’t last forever! So it’s better not to spoil your habits. Set up a schedule and stick to it, as it will not only improve the quality of your work, it will also have a positive impact on your mental health.

3- Dress appropriately

Yes, I know, you can work in your pajamas. But in my opinion working in your sleeping clothes will interfere with your productivity. Wearing pajamas while you work, will always tempt you to doze off when you feel like it. My advice? Wear something that at-least makes you feel productive, you don’t need to wear the usual office attire.

4- Take a lunch break

In offices, we are accustomed to look at the clock every now and then, anticipating our lunch breaks. But when working from home, we eat, what we want, and when we want. This is the luxury of working from home, although, the practice is unhealthy. You should avoid having lunch on your work-station, shut down your laptop/computer and take your break. This will help you to focus on the task at hand, eating while working will interfere with your focus and hamper your productivity.

5- Get yourself a good chair

Bed is not an option, and neither is the couch. Get yourself a good chair, because, FYI a good posture is necessary for a good health. Remember to get a chair that won’t strain your neck or shoulders, a chair that is comfortable but not too comfortable so as to make you lazy.

6- Walk around intermittently

Every now and then, it is good practice to walk around the house, do a few stretches or if possible lift some light weights. Sitting over long periods of time can put strain on your body, and can get you fat.

7- Keep in touch with your mates

Working from home will restrict social interactions, and since, we as humans, are social animals, it is necessary for us to keep in touch with our coworkers, friends and family. It’s important to have daily chat sessions with your coworkers to discuss work related issues, and to keep in touch with your friends regarding personal stuff.

8- Create a to-do list for the day

In case you’re similar to me, you might feel like you have a ceaseless plan for the day. I like to work out all that I need to accomplish for the week and afterwards, every day, pick the top most important things to concentrate on. Limit this to only 3-5 things!

9- Plan your workouts

You don’t have to wait till 5 pm to hit the gym. Take advantage of your environment. Plan your workouts just the way you set up your meetings. You can do it in the morning, before starting to work, during lunch breaks or after you’ve finished working.

 10- Eat healthy snacks

While at home, you will often be tempted to munch on unhealthy snacks like chips, biscuits or drink fizzy drinks every now and then.
